Hidden in the island of Crete, Matala village is one of the must see destinations on your itinerary. Matala became known in the 60’s and 70’s where it was a hotspot for the hippies who wanted to get away from it all and enjoy the natural beauty of the area while living in the caves ( Roman cemetery) carved out on the hill overlooking Matala bay. Big names in the music industry like Cat Stevens and Joni Mitchell (before they were famous), where amongst the many people who experienced the Matala spirit and lifestyle
There are a few people today that still live in the caves in perfect harmony with the locals and you can see them around the main street or on the beach selling handcrafted jewellery . In the evening you can find them in the main square singing.
George the fisherman, who was friends with the hippies (especially Cat Stevens), came up with what became Matala’s motto: Today is life, tomorrow never comes!
